TOLEDO, Ohio – House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized the resilience of the electoral landscape for Democrats during a campaign event for Rep. Marcy Kaptur in a critical Ohio congressional district. This district is pivotal for the Democrats in their quest to regain majority control of the House of Representatives.

Jeffries, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, also criticized President Donald Trump’s recent decision to waive sanctions on Russia. He assured that there will be a bipartisan effort in the House to create a new sanctions package that the president would not have the power to bypass.

“It’s shocking, but not surprising, that an American president would do so much to undermine the cause of democracy, freedom and dignity for the Ukrainian people,” Jeffries stated to The Associated Press after attending church services in Toledo.

As a potential future House speaker, should Democrats reclaim the majority, Jeffries has campaigned across approximately 50 cities, advocating for Democratic candidates. He dismissed Speaker Mike Johnson’s assertion that the upcoming November 3 election would mirror the 2024 election that saw Trump ascend to the presidency and Republicans gain congressional seats, claiming that House Republicans are “divorced from reality.”

“We are working hard across the country, continuing to make the case that we need dramatic change as opposed to the status quo,” Jeffries said, asserting that Democrats are positioned as the champions of affordability in the nation.

Ohio races are key to control of Congress

The state of Ohio is seeing fierce competition in the midterm elections, which will ultimately determine the control of Congress. While the Senate race garners significant attention, particularly between Republican Sen. Jon Husted and Democrat Sherrod Brown, the House races are a crucial, district-by-district effort that will be instrumental in controlling the chamber.

The Toledo-area House seat is a priority for Democrats. Rep. Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in the House, has represented the district for decades. Despite Trump’s previous victories in the district, Kaptur successfully defeated GOP candidate Derek Merrin two years ago, who is now making another attempt for the seat.

“We work very hard,” Kaptur told the Associated Press. “We don’t just work at elections. We work to make a difference in the lives of people.”

In August, Kaptur, 80, faced a serious car accident that left her hospitalized. However, she has since recovered and remains committed to her constituency.

Jeffries praised Kaptur as a legendary figure in the Great Lakes Region, stating, “Once again, she’s going to defy all expectations.”

Trump’s waiver of Russia sanctions roils campaigns

The Toledo area is home to a significant Ukrainian American population, and Kaptur is a leading voice on Ukraine in Congress, having co-founded the Congressional Ukraine Caucus, a bipartisan group focused on issues related to the country.

Following Trump’s decision to waive provisions of the Russia sanctions bill, which Congress had passed to support Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia, Kaptur expressed her outrage. “What he did is just un-American,” she stated firmly. “He has sided with Putin.”

The reaction among members of Congress was one of widespread condemnation, with both Democrats and Republicans expressing their disapproval of Trump’s decision to waive sanctions, which were set to be implemented soon after he signed the bill into law.

In response, Speaker Johnson noted on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” that several colleagues have expressed concerns regarding the decision. He emphasized the need for further discussion and careful consideration of the potential unintended consequences.
