WASHINGTON – Vice President JD Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, on Sunday announced the birth of their fourth child, the first born to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years.

Born Sunday, Alec Neel Vance joins older siblings Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; and Mirabel, 4. The Vances made the announcement through a heartfelt social media post, expressing their joy and gratitude.

“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the statement said, highlighting a moment of personal significance amid their public roles.

The couple expressed their gratitude to the doctors and staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, as well as the White House medical team, who ensured a safe delivery.

Vance, a Republican known for his advocacy on family growth, has often voiced concern over declining birth rates in America. His own family expansion reflects his commitment to this cause. In a previous statement at the 2025 March for Life anti-abortion rally, he declared, “I want more babies in the United States of America.”

At 41, Vance has frequently traveled internationally with Usha, 40, and their children, illustrating a modern approach to balancing family life with public duty. The family often appears together, even on overseas flights, showcasing their close-knit dynamic.

Usha Vance, whose parents immigrated from India, has garnered public interest not only due to her role but also because of the rarity of a sitting vice president expanding their family while in office. The last such occurrence was over 150 years ago, with Schuyler Colfax, who had a son in 1870.

The recent arrival of Alec Neel Vance is part of a broader trend, as other senior officials from the Trump administration, such as Stephen and Katie Miller, and Karoline Leavitt, have also welcomed new additions to their families.

Usha recently faced scrutiny after her fashion choices, particularly a coral maternity dress during a Father’s Day episode of “Storytime with the Second Lady,” became a topic of conversation. The New York Times pointed out how this reflects on broader societal expectations regarding motherhood and womanhood.

In response, Usha Vance humorously engaged with the media, sharing her experience and even posting the receipt for her dress, which she bought at a discount. Her husband praised her savvy shopping skills, further endearing them to the public.

JD Vance has mentioned that the tragic loss of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in 2025 influenced their decision to expand their family. Usha reflected on this sentiment, stating, “It was very powerful, what (Erika) said about her own family, and certainly very moving to both of us,” indicating a shift in their outlook on family life.

In summary, the birth of Alec Neel Vance not only marks a personal milestone for the Vance family but also symbolizes a broader societal conversation about family growth and the challenges of balancing public service with personal life. As the couple navigates their new dynamic, the eyes of the nation will undoubtedly be on them, reflecting a blend of tradition and modernity in the highest echelons of American politics.
