In recent news, Texas Governor Greg Abbott addressed the ongoing speculation regarding the potential sale of Boca Chica State Park to SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk. This came in response to a report by Texas Monthly, which suggested that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) was considering a discussion on the sale of approximately 1,300 acres of public land during their upcoming meeting.

During a press conference held on Monday, Abbott emphasized that the matter is not on the table for a vote in the near future. “What I know is that that’s not coming up for a vote anytime soon,” he stated, highlighting his limited awareness of the details surrounding the issue.

Abbott reassured the public of his commitment to preserving Texas’s parkland, asserting, “No state in America has been adding more parkland than what I’ve done and what Texas has done; I want to continue to preserve our parkland in the state of Texas.” His remarks come amid concerns from environmental activists and local residents regarding the future of Boca Chica State Park.

The Texas Monthly report indicated that the TPWD Commission, appointed by Abbott, was scheduled to discuss the potential sale during a closed-door session on November 5. As of now, neither SpaceX nor the TPWD has issued comments regarding the potential sale. Cameron County officials were also unavailable for comment.

A spokesperson for the Parks and Wildlife Department, Stephanie Garcia, clarified in a statement to Texas Monthly, “The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission is not considering the sale of the Boca Chica property at its November meeting.”

Opposition to the proposed sale has emerged from various political figures, including Gina Hinojosa, a Democratic candidate for governor. Hinojosa, a native of Brownsville, expressed her discontent, stating, “Now, after 12 years of selling out Texas to his corporate donors and making working people foot the bill, Greg Abbott is handing over our land to the world’s only trillionaire. Let me be clear: Texas is not for sale.”

Previously, the TPWD had approved a land swap with SpaceX in 2024, allowing the company to acquire 43 acres from Boca Chica State Park in exchange for 477 acres adjacent to Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. However, SpaceX later withdrew from this deal.

Boca Chica State Park, located just three miles north of the Rio Grande’s mouth, spans over 1,055 acres of diverse ecosystems, including dunes, marshes, and coastal grasslands. SpaceX chose this remote location in 2014 as a test site for rocket launches to minimize interference with populated areas. Since then, the company has purchased privately owned land in the vicinity to facilitate future developments.

However, the presence of SpaceX has raised environmental concerns, with activists arguing that the company’s operations have adversely affected local wildlife and ecosystems. Legal efforts to prevent SpaceX from acquiring additional land have largely been unsuccessful, including a recent federal ruling that denied attempts by environmental groups to block the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from granting SpaceX 715 acres in a nearby wildlife refuge.

As the situation continues to develop, the community remains watchful of the decisions made by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, the implications for Boca Chica State Park, and the ongoing relationship between state leadership and corporate interests.
