WASHINGTON – A major project proposed by former President Donald Trump, a massive 250-foot-tall memorial arch, might disrupt the historical significance of many nearby sites, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

Washington, D.C. is home to numerous monuments and buildings that have been thoughtfully designed over time to represent important events in U.S. history. These sites are often linked by sightlines that create a sense of connection and unity.

The proposed gilded arch, which received initial approval from a key federal commission, could affect the “integrity” of numerous significant historical properties. Specifically, it would alter the “character-defining visual and spatial relationships” that exist between these sites.

The NPS report, released recently, highlights that the project area is part of the Memorial Avenue Corridor, a culturally significant landscape that stretches from the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. This corridor is designed to honor the nation’s history and the sacrifices made by many.

One major concern outlined in the report is that the arch would disrupt the alignment between the Lincoln Memorial, Memorial Bridge, and Arlington House, which was once the home of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. This alignment was intentionally created to symbolize the reunification of North and South, providing both a physical and symbolic connection across the Potomac River.

Despite moving through several approval stages with bodies that include Trump appointees, the project now faces significant hurdles. It has drawn opposition from various groups, including a lawsuit filed by veterans and a historian who argue that the construction is problematic.

The arch design has received early approval from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were also appointed by Trump. The National Capital Area Planning Commission had previously approved the site and preliminary plans, and will review the matter again in an upcoming meeting.

However, legal challenges could delay or even halt the project. The plaintiffs, including three veterans and a historian, argue that the construction needs Congressional approval. Nicolas Sansone, an attorney with Public Citizen Litigation Group, stated, “Our claim is essentially that none of this has any authorization to be happening in the first place.” He emphasized that creating a monument on National Park Service land in Washington, D.C. requires an act of Congress.

The NPS evaluation aligns with the concerns raised by the plaintiffs, indicating that the construction could significantly impact the solemnity of this historic area. “I think it’s very significant that the National Park Service itself understands that this is the effect that it’s going to have,” Sansone remarked.

As of now, the White House has not provided a comment on the situation. The future of the proposed memorial arch remains uncertain as discussions and legal battles continue.
