WASHINGTON – In a recent turn of events, President Donald Trump announced that six individuals have been arrested for allegedly damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This historic site in Washington, D.C. has been at the center of controversy due to a $14-million renovation project that has not gone as planned.
In a post on social media, Trump claimed that there was a “350-foot gash” in the paint, which has raised eyebrows as the administration is racing against time to fix the issues before the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, set to take place next week. Without providing any evidence, he stated that the damage was intentional and that it likely took considerable effort to create such a condition.
According to Trump, another seven people were cited for their involvement in the damage. “It was purposefully and criminally done,” he wrote, suggesting that the vandals operated under the cover of darkness.
The Park Police and the Interior Department have yet to comment on Trump’s claims. However, the Associated Press has verified that one person was arrested for touching the peeling paint, while federal workers are currently addressing an algae bloom in the water. This algae issue is part of the ongoing problems related to the renovations, which included adding a new liner to the pool that Trump has dubbed “American flag blue.”
Trump mentioned that “some of the water” would be drained from the pool, either just before or after the Fourth of July, to carry out permanent repairs. The specifics regarding the scale, scope, or cost of these repairs remain unclear.
In an effort to secure the area, National Guard members and U.S. Park Police have been patrolling the deck around the pool following Trump’s assertion that vandalism was to blame for the damage.
The president initially pitched the renovation as a way to clean, beautify, and restore the iconic site, which he claimed had suffered from neglect under previous administrations. Algae has been a persistent problem for the pool for over a century, and Trump insisted that the new coating would transform it into a stunning feature along the National Mall.
However, just weeks after declaring the rehabilitation complete in time for Independence Day, the pool became infested with a bright green algae bloom that obscured the new coating. On a recent visit, the Associated Press observed a piece of the liner, approximately 4 square feet in size, floating in the water, with additional pieces spotted shortly thereafter.
