HONOLULU – A new tropical storm, named Hernan, formed recently in the Pacific Ocean. Fortunately, it is not threatening any land at this time. However, another storm system is on its way and could bring heavy rain and flooding to Hawaii this weekend, according to meteorologists.

Tropical Storm Hernan is currently located about 1,460 miles (2,350 kilometers) west of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. As per the National Hurricane Center, it boasts maximum sustained winds of around 40 mph (64 kph) and is moving towards the west.

On the other hand, another weather system known as potential Tropical Cyclone One-C is about 775 miles (1,247 kilometers) east-southeast of Hawaii. This system is expected to cause heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hazardous surf conditions starting late Friday.

Currently, winds from this system are also around 40 mph, but it is not yet organized enough to be classified as a tropical storm. Meteorologists predict that it could make landfall on the southern part of the Big Island as a tropical storm on Saturday.

The rainfall forecast for the Hawaiian Islands is quite concerning. Experts estimate that the region could see between 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 centimeters) of rain, with some areas potentially receiving up to 20 inches (51 centimeters). This significant amount of rainfall could lead to flooding and mudslides, which can be dangerous for residents and visitors alike.

In the Atlantic Ocean, a different storm named Tropical Storm Cristobal has weakened into a tropical depression and is expected to dissipate soon. It is currently located about 610 miles (982 kilometers) west of the Azores and poses no threat to land.
