MIAMI – A teenager has been charged with the tragic death of his stepsister aboard a Carnival Cruise ship. On Tuesday, Timothy Hudson, who is 16 years old, entered a not-guilty plea and chose not to attend his scheduled court hearing in Miami.

Hudson, whose defense attorney is Eric Cohen, has received the official indictment but opted to waive his appearance at the arraignment that was set for Wednesday. He has signed a one-page document to confirm this decision.

The case revolves around the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner, Hudson’s stepsister. Her body was discovered under a bed in their shared room on the Carnival Horizon during a family cruise in November. This incident has drawn significant attention due to its tragic nature.

Hudson faces serious charges, including murder and aggravated sexual abuse. Although he was initially released into the care of an uncle following his February arrest, prosecutors are now pushing for him to be detained while the legal proceedings continue, a matter that remains unresolved.

Anna Kepner was a high school cheerleader at Temple Christian School located in Titusville, Florida, which is about 40 miles east of Orlando. The cause of her death, determined to be mechanical asphyxia, indicates that an object or force prevented her from breathing.

Initially, records and hearings in this case were kept private since Hudson was charged as a minor. However, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom later granted a request for him to be prosecuted as an adult, resulting in the case being unsealed on April 10.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the serious issues that can arise even in seemingly safe environments like a family vacation. The legal proceedings will continue to unfold as the community looks for answers.
