Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak is the largest in decades in the US

NEW YORK – This year, Pennsylvania has faced a serious health challenge, surpassing 1,000 reported measles cases, marking the largest outbreak in over 30 years. The situation is part of a broader national trend, as the U.S. is experiencing its worst year for measles since 1991, with nearly 3,900 cases reported according to the CDC.

In the past two years, there have been eight measles-related deaths in the U.S., which is more than the total for the previous three decades combined. The ongoing outbreaks have been reported in several states, including Texas and Utah, with South Carolina previously holding the record for the largest outbreak at 997 cases.

Pennsylvania’s outbreak began in April, primarily in areas west of Philadelphia. As of now, there are 1,004 reported cases, which include 198 hospitalizations and five fatalities. Health experts emphasize that these outbreaks can largely be attributed to low vaccination rates.

It’s been decades since a single U.S. state has reported more than 1,000 measles cases, with the last major outbreak occurring in New York City during the early 1990s. Back then, over 4,500 people were infected. The U.S. had successfully eliminated the domestic spread of measles in 2000 by maintaining vaccination rates above 95%, which are necessary to prevent outbreaks.

In November, international health officials will meet to discuss whether the U.S. and Mexico have lost their measles-free status due to these rising cases. Measles is known for its high contagion rate; it can spread easily through the air when someone coughs or sneezes, and it can linger on surfaces for up to two hours. The CDC notes that up to 90% of unvaccinated individuals exposed to the virus may become infected.

The increase in measles infections in the U.S. correlates with a decline in routine vaccinations among children, often due to parental exemptions, limited healthcare access, and the spread of misinformation about vaccines.

Pennsylvania is not alone in facing this challenge; neighboring Ohio has reported over 200 cases this year, with certain counties affected similarly to Pennsylvania due to lower vaccination rates in communities, including a significant Amish population.

In a troubling development, the CDC has started to acknowledge measles-related deaths in Pennsylvania. In August, officials announced that two unvaccinated individuals had died after contracting measles. This information sparked a debate between Pennsylvania’s pro-vaccine Governor Josh Shapiro and U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has raised concerns about vaccines.

Since that initial report, three additional deaths have been documented. For weeks, the CDC did not include these fatalities in its measles data, stating it needed more information. However, the agency has recently updated its records to reflect two deaths attributed to the outbreak.

With measles outbreaks on the rise, the importance of vaccinations cannot be overstated. Vaccination not only protects individuals but also helps safeguard communities by preventing the spread of this highly contagious virus. As we move forward, public health initiatives will need to focus on increasing vaccination rates to ensure that history does not repeat itself.
