MEXICO CITY – A powerful Hurricane Polo is currently impacting Mexico’s Pacific coast, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. This storm, which is maintaining its Category 5 strength, is causing significant concern as it approaches the coast, with waves crashing onto beaches that are usually calm and inviting.

As the storm progresses, the U.S. National Hurricane Center has warned that while the most severe winds may remain offshore, the heavy rain poses a serious risk of flooding and landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas like Guerrero state.

Meanwhile, to the west, Tropical Storm Nolo is forming and could soon become a hurricane as it moves toward Hawaii. This storm has the potential to bring catastrophic flooding, with forecasts indicating it may approach the Big Island by Friday. A hurricane watch is already in effect for Hawaii County.

In preparation for the incoming storms, public schools and state offices on the Big Island are closed, and Maui County is also shutting down for safety as heavy rain and winds are anticipated. Experts predict that Nolo could drop up to 20 inches (51 centimeters) of rain, which could lead to dangerous conditions.

Local business owners, such as Concepción López Villegas from Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán state, are taking precautions to protect their establishments. López Villegas expressed her anxiety about the storm’s potential to devastate her restaurant, a place she has dedicated decades to building. “We’re worried and trying to protect our businesses,” she said, highlighting the emotional toll of such natural disasters.

Hurricane Polo is currently located about 130 miles south-southwest of Zihuatanejo and is moving northwest at approximately 7 mph (11 kph). The storm’s maximum sustained winds are around 160 mph (257 kph), making it a formidable force, with hurricane-force winds extending up to 40 miles (65 km) from the eye.

In addition to the immediate dangers posed by flooding and mudslides, the region affected by Polo is largely rural and impoverished, where residents often feel neglected by authorities during emergencies. The Mexican government is responding by ordering evacuations in particularly at-risk areas and has deployed thousands of military and Red Cross personnel to assist with preparations.

As Hawaii braces for the possibility of Nolo intensifying into a hurricane, officials are urging residents to prepare emergency kits and take necessary precautions. The National Weather Service has indicated that flash flooding is a primary concern, especially in areas that have already experienced heavy rainfall from previous storms.

Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda emphasized the seriousness of the situation in a social media message, urging residents to be proactive in their preparations. “This is a very serious situation,” he stated. “We do believe that the rain is going to come. It’s coming already.”

The storm season is also seeing activity from Tropical Storm Fay in the Atlantic, which has formed with winds of 40 mph (65 km/h), and Hurricane Odalys in the Pacific, which has winds of 85 mph (137 kph). While these storms are not currently threatening land, they serve as a reminder of the volatile weather conditions that can accompany hurricane season.

As communities in both Mexico and Hawaii prepare for these storms, it is a time for vigilance, community support, and readiness to face whatever challenges may arise from nature’s unpredictable power.
