PORTLAND, Ore. – Former Senator Bob Packwood, a notable figure in Oregon’s political history, has passed away at the age of 93. His legacy is marked by his role as a moderate Republican who championed abortion and women’s rights, although his career ended amid serious allegations of sexual harassment.

Packwood’s family announced his death in an obituary sent to the media, but did not provide additional details.

Known as a political scrapper, Packwood served in the Senate for 27 years and initially resisted resigning from his position, wanting to be remembered for his contributions rather than the controversies that shadowed his later years.

Before the #MeToo movement brought attention to issues of sexual misconduct, Packwood’s story highlighted how personal actions can undermine a public persona. He was once lauded by organizations like Planned Parenthood for his progressive stance on women’s rights.

Political Career and Controversy

Born into a politically active family, Packwood was the great-grandson of a member of Oregon’s 1857 Constitutional Convention. He was elected to the Senate in 1968 and quickly became recognized as a leading advocate for abortion rights, earning respect from women’s groups nationwide.

However, his reputation took a serious hit in 1993 when the Senate Ethics Committee began investigating multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, including unwanted advances from over two dozen women. These allegations became a turning point that overshadowed his political achievements.

Resignation and Aftermath

Despite his contributions, including significant tax reform in 1986, Packwood resigned from the Senate in September 1995 amidst the scandal. Following his resignation, he transitioned into a lobbying career, founding Sunrise Research Corp., which grossed substantial earnings in its first few years.

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, who succeeded Packwood, acknowledged his accomplishments but emphasized that the allegations against him could not be overlooked. “His horrible history as documented in his own diaries will forever overshadow that public record,” Wyden noted.

Legacy and Reflection

Packwood was known for his blunt and independent approach to politics, often crossing party lines. He expressed pride in his ability to forge compromises and navigate complex political landscapes, even as he faced significant personal challenges.

In a 2002 interview, Packwood reflected on his past scandals, stating, “You cannot go through the rest of life and say look what happened… Pretty soon you become a bore to your friends.” He emphasized the importance of moving forward and not dwelling on past mistakes.

Though his political career was marked by both significant contributions and serious controversies, Bob Packwood remains a complex figure in American politics. His story serves as a reminder of the duality of public service – where accomplishments can be overshadowed by personal conduct.
