MIAMI – Recently, Hurricane Genevieve picked up strength in the Pacific Ocean and is now classified as a major hurricane. This means it has maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (220 kph), placing it in the Category 4 category. To put this in perspective, a Category 3 hurricane starts at winds of just 111 mph (179 kph) or more. It’s certainly a powerful storm!

As of the latest reports, Genevieve was situated approximately 530 miles (855 kilometers) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, moving west-northwest at 14 mph (22 kph). Fortunately, there are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect. However, the National Hurricane Center cautions that the storm’s swells could create dangerous surf and rip current conditions along parts of Mexico’s southwestern coast. These waves are expected to reach southern Baja California as soon as Sunday night or Monday.

While Genevieve is forecasted to strengthen further, it is also expected to weaken by midweek. This fluctuation is common for hurricanes as they move over different ocean temperatures and wind patterns.

In the Pacific, another storm, Hurricane Fausto, has weakened to a Category 1 level. It is moving towards the Hawaiian Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph). Although it is losing strength, forecasters warn that Fausto could still produce significant surf for Hawaii, so beachgoers should remain cautious.

Fausto is currently located about 825 miles (1,330 kilometers) east of Hilo, Hawaii, and is also moving west at 14 mph (22 kph). Even as it weakens, its impact on surf conditions will still be felt.

Staying informed and prepared is crucial during hurricane season. For more detailed updates and safety tips, you can always check reliable sources like the National Hurricane Center or local weather stations.
