HAYS COUNTY, Texas – In a concerning development for local residents, state officials confirmed the detection of the West Nile virus in two mosquito samples collected this week from various sites near San Marcos. This marks a significant point in public health monitoring, as these are the first positive samples reported in Hays County for the 2026 season, according to a recent news release from the county.
The Texas Department of Health and Human Services is closely monitoring the situation. As of Sunday, four traps in nearby Bexar County have also tested positive for the virus since the first case was identified in early May. Alarmingly, state data indicates that five human cases of West Nile virus have been reported this year, all occurring in the Houston area.
While most individuals bitten by an infected mosquito may not exhibit any symptoms, Hays County officials note that approximately 20% of those infected could develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, rash, or other flu-like indications. It is crucial for specific groups, including adults aged 50 and older or individuals with compromised immune systems, to seek medical guidance if they begin to show these symptoms.
To mitigate the risk of mosquito bites, Hays County health officials recommend that residents take proactive measures, which include:

- Using insect repellent containing EPA-registered ingredients, especially during peak mosquito hours.
- Wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, particularly in the evening.
- Installing screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of homes.
