U.S.-led task force tells ships to reroute on first day of new effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz

DUBAI – The United States has initiated a new maritime operation aimed at assisting stranded vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. This move comes as tensions persist due to ongoing conflicts in the region, with no immediate peace deal in sight.

Following the announcement of “Project Freedom” by U.S. President Donald Trump, the Joint Maritime Information Center declared the establishment of an “enhanced security area” south of the usual shipping lanes. Mariners have been advised to coordinate with Omani authorities due to expected high traffic volumes in the area, which lies between Iranian and Omani waters.

The center issued a stern warning, indicating that navigation near the usual traffic separation scheme could be “extremely hazardous” due to the presence of unexploded mines. This advisory underscores the risks associated with the ongoing conflict and the need for heightened maritime security.

The commencement of this U.S.-led maritime task force aims to restore confidence among commercial vessels navigating the strait. However, such efforts may jeopardize the fragile ceasefire currently in place, which has been maintained despite a lack of progress on critical issues fueling the ongoing war.

As of Monday, it remained uncertain whether any vessels had accepted the U.S. offer. In a strong statement, Iran’s military command warned that any foreign military presence, particularly from the U.S., would be met with hostility. Major General Pilot Ali Abdollahi stated, “We warn that any foreign military force — especially the aggressive U.S. military — that intends to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz will be targeted.”

The Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil is transported, has become a focal point of economic disruption as a result of the ongoing conflict initiated by the U.S. and Israel on February 28. This situation has adversely affected countries in Europe and Asia that rely on Persian Gulf oil, contributing to increased volatility in global energy prices.

New Maritime Initiative and International Response

In a social media announcement, Trump emphasized the U.S. commitment to ensuring the safety of commercial shipping, pledging support for “neutral and innocent” nations. He stated, “We will guide their ships safely out of these restricted waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business.”

The U.S. Central Command revealed that this initiative will involve a substantial military presence, including guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and approximately 15,000 service members, although details regarding their deployment remain unclear.

Many commercial ships, particularly oil and gas tankers, have been trapped in the Persian Gulf since the conflict escalated. Crew members have reported witnessing drone interceptions and missile explosions while facing shortages of essential supplies like drinking water and food.

Trump characterized the U.S. effort as a humanitarian gesture, stating it was made “on behalf of the United States, Middle Eastern Countries but, in particular, the Country of Iran.” He also cautioned that any interference with this process would necessitate a forceful response.

In response, Iranian officials have dismissed Trump’s announcement, with the state-run IRNA news agency labeling it a product of his “delirium.” Ebrahim Azizi, head of Iran’s national security commission, warned that any foreign interference in the strait would be regarded as a violation of the ceasefire.

Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts and Economic Implications

As tensions continue, Iran is reviewing the U.S. response to its latest proposal aimed at ending the war. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei clarified that discussions at this stage do not involve nuclear negotiations, a longstanding issue of contention between the two nations.

Iran’s proposal outlines demands for the U.S. to lift sanctions, cease its naval blockade of Iranian ports, withdraw military forces from the region, and halt hostilities, including Israel’s operations in Lebanon. This proposal has been acknowledged by Trump, who expressed skepticism about its potential for success.

Despite ongoing tensions, Iranian officials have asserted that the Strait of Hormuz will not revert to its pre-war state. They have moved to impose charges on transiting ships while the U.S. has warned shipping companies against any payments to Iran, which could lead to sanctions.

The U.S. naval blockade, initiated on April 13, has severely impacted Iran’s economy, significantly reducing oil revenues. As of now, the U.S. Central Command has instructed 49 commercial vessels to turn back, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by maritime operations in the region.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Iran’s oil revenue has drastically decreased, estimating that they have garnered less than $1.3 million in tolls, a stark contrast to their previous daily earnings. He warned that Iran’s oil storage is nearing capacity, prompting concerns that wells may need to be shut down shortly.
