KABUL – Rescue crews are actively engaged in a harrowing operation, recovering bodies from the wreckage of a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, following a devastating airstrike that officials say resulted in the deaths of at least 400 individuals. This tragic incident, reportedly an overnight airstrike by Pakistan, has raised significant concerns about civilian safety amidst escalating cross-border tensions.

The Pakistani government has categorically denied allegations that it targeted a civilian facility, asserting that its military operations were aimed solely at military installations. These strikes came in the context of ongoing clashes that have marked a worrying escalation in the conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which has persisted since late February 2023.

Afghanistan’s deputy government spokesperson, Hamdullah Fitrat, reported that the airstrike hit the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital, a facility with a capacity of 2,000 beds, around 9 p.m. local time. He described the destruction as extensive, with a death toll that has “so far” reached 400, and approximately 250 individuals injured. As of early Tuesday morning, there was no updated official count of casualties.

Local media captured footage of security personnel employing flashlights amidst the chaos, as they worked to rescue victims while firefighters battled blazes within the debris of the facility.

Cross-Border Tensions Escalate

This airstrike occurred shortly after reports indicated an exchange of gunfire along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, resulting in the deaths of four individuals in Afghanistan. This latest bout of violence has entered its third week, marking the most severe fighting between the two nations in years, and has been met with international calls for a ceasefire that have yet to yield results.

Zabihullah Mujahid, an Afghan government spokesperson, condemned the airstrike on X, accusing Pakistan of targeting civilians and hospitals as part of a broader strategy to instigate terror. He labeled the victims as “innocent civilians and addicts,” and characterized the attack as a crime against humanity.

Pakistan’s Response

In response, officials from Pakistan have rejected these claims as unfounded. Mosharraf Zaidi, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, stated that no hospital was targeted. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar defended the military’s actions, asserting that the strikes were precise operations aimed at military installations in Kabul and Nangarhar, with no collateral damage intended.

The Pakistani government has accused the Afghan Taliban of harboring militant groups that threaten Pakistan’s national security. This assertion has been a persistent point of contention, with Pakistan’s Ministry of Information denouncing Mujahid’s statements as misleading and inflammatory.

International Reaction and Broader Implications

The United Nations Security Council recently called on the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan to intensify efforts to combat terrorism. The resolution, adopted unanimously, condemned all terrorist activities, although it did not specifically address the recent strikes. Pakistan has reiterated its stance that Afghanistan must take action against the Pakistani Taliban and other militant groups operating from its territory.

The ongoing violence, which has disrupted previous ceasefires, has raised alarms about the potential resurgence of extremist groups in the region, including al-Qaida and the Islamic State. With both nations declaring an “open war,” the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution to prevent further humanitarian crises.

As violence persists, the implications for regional stability and civilian safety remain dire. The need for a diplomatic resolution is more pressing than ever to avoid further tragedy and humanitarian fallout.
