SAN ANTONIO – A 65-year-old man, Ruben Cantu, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Ricky Marquez Jr., who was fatally shot during an altercation in a nightclub parking lot. This tragic incident took place on February 2, 2025, at Papi Gallo Cantina.
According to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, Cantu’s actions stemmed from a birthday celebration with family at the nightclub. As the night progressed and some members of the group became intoxicated, they were escorted out by the staff due to disruptive behavior.
The situation escalated in the parking lot, where Cantu pulled out a firearm during a confrontation and fired multiple shots into the crowd. Unfortunately, Ricky Marquez Jr., aged 42, was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual, Andrew Rivera, sustained injuries from gunfire as well.
Authorities apprehended Cantu about a month after the shooting while investigating a separate incident involving a terroristic threat. This led to his connection with the fatal shooting, ultimately resulting in his life sentence.
The case underscores the ongoing issues of gun violence and the repercussions of alcohol-fueled confrontations, which have become increasingly prevalent in social settings. The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office continues to advocate for stricter measures to prevent such tragic events from occurring in the future.
