Iran and the US harden their positions as Tehran keeps its grip on the Strait of Hormuz

DUBAI – As diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire in the escalating conflict in the Middle East show signs of stalling, both Iran and the United States have taken firm stances that could further complicate the situation. Iran has begun to formalize its authority over the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, while the U.S. is preparing for the deployment of additional troops in the region, potentially positioning them for ground operations within Iran.

Recent reports indicate that sirens in Israel signaled incoming Iranian missile attacks, contributing to heightened tensions. In the United Arab Emirates, two fatalities were reported alongside three injuries resulting from debris from a missile interception in Abu Dhabi.

According to industry experts, Iran is implementing what has been dubbed a “de facto ‘toll booth’ regime” in the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical for global oil and gas transportation, accounting for approximately 20% of traded energy supplies in peacetime. Reports suggest that some vessels are paying tolls in Chinese yuan to navigate these waters safely.

In response, the USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship, is moving closer to the Middle East, bringing with it approximately 2,500 Marines. Additionally, the U.S. has ordered 1,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division to the area.

While these troop movements indicate a potential for increased military action, they do not necessarily confirm that U.S. President Donald Trump will resort to force to compel Iran to cease its activities in the Strait and halt its missile attacks on Gulf Arab states.

The current tensions echo previous military deployments, such as a substantial force sent to the Caribbean before the U.S. military’s capture of former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in January. Analysts suggest that in the ongoing conflict, the U.S. may focus on seizing strategic locations such as Iran’s oil terminal at Kharg Island.

Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of the U.S. Central Command, reported that U.S. forces have targeted over 10,000 sites in Iran since hostilities began on February 28, resulting in the destruction of 92% of Iran’s largest naval vessels and a significant portion of its missile, drone, and naval production capabilities.

“We’re not done yet,” Cooper asserted in a recent video message. “We are on a path to completely eliminate Iran’s broader military apparatus.”

Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz has allowed it to selectively block vessels associated with U.S. and Israeli efforts while permitting others to pass, effectively creating a toll-like system. Lawmaker Mohammadreza Rezaei Kouchi indicated that Iran’s parliament is working to formalize these fees, stating, “We provide its security, and it is natural that ships and oil tankers should pay such fees.”

Shipping intelligence firm Lloyd’s List Intelligence described this arrangement as a “de facto ‘toll booth’ regime,” noting that vessels must submit details for sanctions screening and cargo alignment checks, prioritizing oil shipments.

The implications of Iran’s actions have been profound, contributing to increasing oil prices that have surged by over 40% since the onset of the conflict. Brent crude recently traded at approximately US$104 per barrel, raising alarms about a potential global energy crisis. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized this point, calling the situation a “catastrophe for the world’s economies.”

Despite ongoing troop deployments, U.S. officials maintain that negotiations are still in play. Washington has reportedly sent a 15-point ceasefire proposal through Pakistan, which includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump has expressed confidence that Iran is eager to negotiate, stating, “They want to make a deal so badly, but they’re afraid to say it because they figure they’ll be killed by their own people.”

Contrastingly, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has denied any ongoing negotiations, asserting that the U.S. attempts to communicate do not constitute real dialogue. He emphasized that Iran has its own five-point proposal, which includes affirming the country’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

As hostilities escalate, Israel has launched a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian infrastructure, leading to air defense alerts in Tehran and explosions reported in several cities, including Jerusalem. Meanwhile, regional allies like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have reported intercepting drones and addressing damage from assaults linked to the conflict.

The human cost of the ongoing conflict is staggering, with over 1,500 reported fatalities in Iran and casualties emerging from various regions, including Israel and Lebanon. The international community watches closely as the situation continues to evolve amidst rising tensions and the quest for a diplomatic resolution.
