SAN ANTONIO – A new interchange at Loop 1604 and Blanco Road on San Antonio’s North Side is changing the way drivers navigate one of the area’s busiest intersections.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) completed the diverging diamond interchange (DDI) on Saturday, August 22, marking a significant milestone in local infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing traffic flow.
A diverging diamond interchange is designed to temporarily shift drivers to the opposite side of the roadway before guiding them back to their intended lanes. While this innovative layout can improve traffic efficiency, it may also feel disorienting to first-time users. “Just driving through it the first time for me was pretty confusing, and it felt a little scary,” said Kayla McConnell, a local resident who has lived on the North Side her entire life.
Another North Side homeowner, identified only as Sharaf, echoed McConnell’s sentiments, stating, “This is very, very risky, very confusing,” and recounted a near-miss incident that occurred while navigating the new interchange.
TxDOT has indicated that Loop 1604 and Blanco Road is one of the most heavily trafficked areas in north San Antonio. The new DDI design is engineered to reduce delays and improve overall traffic flow through this critical intersection. The estimated cost for Segment 3 of this project is approximately $279 million, reflecting the importance of this infrastructure upgrade.
Despite the initial confusion, some locals have noted improvements in the driving experience. “There is good signage, so you can follow the lanes a little better,” McConnell remarked. “It feels a little less chaotic now compared to when the cones were there. It just felt like mayhem.”
McConnell took to social media to share her experiences and concerns regarding the new interchange, prompting a wave of responses from thousands of users who voiced similar feelings and questions about the rationale behind the DDI design.
The Loop 1604 and Blanco Road interchange is one of seven DDI installations in Texas, as reported by a TxDOT spokesperson. The department plans to initiate construction on another diverging diamond interchange at Interstate 37 and SL 13 (Southeast Military Drive) in the upcoming months, continuing its commitment to modernizing transportation infrastructure in the region.
