ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas – An intense police chase spanning over 100 miles unfolded recently, starting at a border patrol checkpoint just north of Laredo and culminating in Atascosa County. The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) reported that this dramatic pursuit resulted in the arrest of two individuals suspected of involvement in human smuggling.

The ordeal began on a Friday evening when border patrol agents identified a vehicle linked to a potential human smuggling operation at the checkpoint. The situation escalated rapidly as the vehicle fled the scene, prompting law enforcement agencies to react swiftly.

As the vehicle sped away towards Freer, Texas, local authorities—including the Freer Police Department and the Duval County Sheriff’s Office—attempted to intercept it on Texas Highway 16. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and U.S. Border Patrol soon joined the pursuit, illustrating the collaborative effort among agencies to manage this high-risk situation.

The chase continued through McMullen County and into Atascosa County, with deputies from both counties playing a crucial role in bringing it to a halt. Utilizing spike strips, law enforcement successfully disabled the fleeing vehicle after approximately 150 miles of pursuit.

The dramatic chase concluded on Texas Highway 16, just north of FM 140. Two suspects were apprehended by DPS and the Duval County Sheriff’s Office. Following their arrest, both individuals were transported to the Duval County Jail, where they will face multiple felony charges, as confirmed by the ACSO.

Additionally, two other individuals, suspected of being in the country illegally, were handed over to the U.S. Border Patrol for further processing. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing human trafficking and illegal immigration in border regions.
