In a thrilling weekend at the box office, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has managed to hold onto its top spot, successfully fending off fierce competition from various new releases. The film, now in its fourth weekend, added an impressive $39 million to its totals. This brings its domestic earnings to over $854.9 million, positioning it to soon surpass the legendary “Avengers: Endgame” to become the second highest-grossing domestic film of all time, just behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which earned $936.7 million.

“The Odyssey,” directed by Christopher Nolan, also made headlines by becoming his highest grossing film both domestically and internationally. With a total of $19.5 million in its sixth weekend, it has crossed the $1.4 billion mark worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever.

Sony’s “Insidious: Out of the Further” came in second place with a solid $25.3 million from 3,303 theaters. This sixth installment of the popular horror franchise not only succeeded at the box office but also showcased its relatively low production budget of $18 million, making it the most financially ambitious project in the series.

In contrast, the new action film “Mutiny,” featuring Jason Statham as a man wrongfully accused of murder, opened weakly in sixth place with only $7.5 million. Its troubled release was complicated by a brief accidental availability on Prime Video, which may have hindered its box office performance.

Meanwhile, the comedy “Spa Weekend,” produced by the team behind hits like “The Hangover,” garnered just $3.1 million from 2,009 locations, despite drawing a predominantly female audience. It even found itself competing with a re-release of “The Fast and the Furious,” which managed to attract slightly more viewers.

Despite some new releases struggling, moviegoers have shown strong enthusiasm this summer, which has accumulated around $4.4 billion in ticket sales, making it one of the top four highest-grossing summers recorded. Paul Dergarabedian, a market analyst, expressed optimism about the future of the industry, noting how the current summer season could be a pivotal moment in box office history.

Looking at the overall trends, the year has surpassed $7 billion in box office sales, marking a 20.4% increase compared to 2025, although it still lags behind the numbers from 2019 by about 7.1%. This resurgence can be attributed to a diverse range of films and the recovery of the industry after recent challenges.
