NEW YORK – Richard Riehle, a well-known character actor in both television and film, has passed away at the age of 78. Riehle was recognized for his versatile roles, often portraying authority figures, but he also had a knack for comedy. One of his most memorable performances was as Tom Smykowski, a hapless product manager in the cult classic “Office Space.”

Wright Entertainment Inc. announced his death on October 15, 2023, but did not provide specific details about the cause. In their statement, they expressed that the industry has lost an extraordinary talent and the community has lost a genuinely kind person.

Riehle’s impressive career spanned nearly five decades. He appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including a quartermaster in the Civil War movie “Glory,” a prison guard in “The Fugitive,” and an air marshal in “Executive Decision.” He also had guest roles on popular TV series like “The West Wing” and played a principal in the TV adaptation of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

In a 2017 article, The AV Club noted that if a casting director needed a robust, mustachioed man, Riehle was likely at the top of their list. His journey into acting began unexpectedly during his senior year at the University of Notre Dame. Although he couldn’t afford an extra year of school, he was allowed to take all the necessary credits in theater in just one semester, which led him to a teaching assistantship at the University of Minnesota.

Riehle made his film debut in the 1977 movie “Joyride,” sharing the screen with Desi Arnaz Jr. and Melanie Griffith. His comedic talent shone through in films like “Bridesmaids” and “Shadows and Fog,” as well as in the sitcom “Grounded For Life.” He also had a special connection to the “Star Trek” franchise, appearing in three different series: “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” and “Star Trek: Enterprise.”

One of Riehle’s most cherished roles was in the 1999 film “Office Space.” His character, Tom Smykowski, famously insisted, “I have people skills!” while facing layoffs at Initech, endearing him to audiences who resonated with his plight.

Beyond his remarkable talent, Riehle was remembered for his kindness and generosity, especially towards emerging actors and filmmakers. According to Wright Entertainment, he was always ready to encourage and support newcomers in the industry.
