NEW YORK – Christopher Nolan’s latest film, “The Odyssey,” has made a huge splash at the box office, earning an impressive estimated $124.5 million in the U.S. and another $139.6 million from international audiences. This marks Nolan’s best opening since the iconic “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012 and surpasses his recent hit, “Oppenheimer.”
Nolan, known for his unique storytelling and cinematic style, has turned Homer’s ancient epic into a modern blockbuster. In an era dominated by sequels and franchise films, it’s remarkable to see a director adapt such a classic piece of literature for the big screen.

Since the pandemic, Nolan has played a vital role in revitalizing the cinema experience. His previous film, “Tenet,” was one of the first major releases to hit theaters in 2020, and “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” have helped create a significant cultural moment in film history. “Oppenheimer” grossed an astounding $975 million worldwide.
“The Odyssey” debuted during a summer that has seen cinema attendance surge, with ticket sales running about 10% ahead of last year, according to Rentrak. The film industry is hopeful for the first $10 billion year at the domestic box office since the pandemic began.
Looking ahead, the main question is whether “The Odyssey” will maintain its momentum. It had no new competition during its opening weekend, and early presales for its second weekend are already ranking among IMAX’s top 10, indicating strong continued interest.
The film’s next competitor will be Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya, releasing on July 31.
In “The Odyssey,” viewers can expect a star-studded cast, with Matt Damon portraying Odysseus, Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as the goddess Athena, Robert Pattinson as the suitor Antinous, and Charlize Theron as the nymph Calypso.
Nolan’s casting choices, including Lupita Nyong’o as Helen and Elliot Page as a soldier, sparked some controversy among conservative commentators, with notable figures like Elon Musk publicly criticizing the decisions. However, this backlash has not hindered the film’s success, as it has emerged as one of the biggest cultural events of the year.
Critics have responded positively to “The Odyssey,” with a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore from audiences, indicating that it resonates well with viewers.
