KAMPALA – A journalist was crowned as the new king of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom on Tuesday, following the recent passing of the former monarch, King Oyo Nyimba, who was affectionately known as the “boy king.” This transition has been met with mixed emotions, including grief and a dispute over succession.

The new king, who has taken the name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo, was previously a broadcaster and editor with Uganda Broadcasting Corp. His coronation involved traditional rituals and a public unveiling, marking a significant moment for the kingdom and its people.

Uganda’s traditional kingdoms were initially banned in the 1960s after the country gained independence from British colonial rule. However, they were restored in 1993. Although these traditional leaders do not have formal political power, they play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage and identity among their communities.

The coronation ceremony took place in Fort Portal, a town in western Uganda near the Congo border, and attracted thousands of onlookers, both in person and through televised broadcasts. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni attended the event and encouraged traditional leaders to promote local languages, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation.

During his coronation speech, Nyabongo expressed his commitment to being a unifying figure for all people of Tooro. He emphasized the importance of hard work and discipline, stating, “heritage must be matched by discipline and hard work.” He has been raised with the understanding that his royal lineage comes with responsibilities rather than privileges.

Nyabongo was not the first in line for the throne, but he was chosen by the elders of the Babiito clan, the ruling family of the Tooro Kingdom. This decision came after King Oyo’s untimely death from cancer at just 34 years old. There are ongoing disputes regarding this selection process, particularly voiced by the queen mother, Best Kemigisa, who claims that King Oyo left behind a young son whose identity has yet to be revealed. She argues that the selection of Nyabongo did not follow the late king’s written wishes.

Despite the controversy, local media reports have circulated images and rumors of a “Baby Oyo,” further complicating the situation and sparking hope among some of Oyo’s supporters. Critics, however, argue that if this child exists, he should have been presented to the kingdom’s elders during King Oyo’s lifetime to validate his claim to the throne.

Political analyst Nicholas Sengoba commented on the situation, stating that the Babiito’s decision reflects the kingdom’s norms, even if not universally accepted. The recent history of the Tooro Kingdom has been marked by notable figures, including King Oyo, who was crowned at just three years old after his father’s death. Oyo captivated many with his vibrant personality and was even introduced to world leaders like South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi, who supported the royal family for years.

As the new king, Nyabongo carries the weight of tradition and expectation. While he may face challenges related to legitimacy and acceptance, he aims to unite the people of Tooro and honor the legacy of his predecessor.
