SAN ANTONIO – In a disturbing turn of events, two women have been arrested on animal cruelty charges following the tragic deaths of their three dogs. The incident has raised serious concerns about pet ownership responsibilities and the consequences of neglect.

On Wednesday afternoon, San Antonio police apprehended Brittany Urquidez, 31, and Kristine Urquidez, 35, after officers found them passed out in a pickup truck at a North Side storage facility. Authorities were alerted by a concerned individual who noticed the women had been asleep for over two hours in a parking lot on Blanco Road near Lockhill-Selma.

As officers investigated, they discovered that the suspects’ dogs were left inside a moving truck parked nearby. This truck had its windows covered with blankets and was turned off, lacking any air conditioning. When police opened the door, they were hit by a foul odor and soon realized the heartbreaking truth: three dogs were found dead inside the vehicle.

Witnesses, like Anthony Norris, who rents office space at the storage facility, expressed their horror at the situation. “That’s horrible. I mean, you got to make sure if you’re a pet owner that you care for them like you care for children,” Norris stated. As a dog owner himself, he emphasized the importance of never leaving pets in a hot car, especially in Texas, where temperatures can quickly become dangerous.

The moving truck remained at the storage facility with search warrant paperwork attached to its side. This document detailed the dogs involved, describing them as one white American Staffordshire Terrier, one gray American Staffordshire Terrier, and one Australian Cattle Dog blend.

During the police encounter, Kristine Urquidez was unable to pass a sobriety test, resulting in an additional charge of driving while intoxicated. Brittany Urquidez was reported to be so intoxicated that she could not stay awake, leading to charges of public intoxication.

Norris commented on the situation, suggesting that the women should not be allowed to have pets again due to their negligence. This incident is not isolated; it mirrors another recent case where a man was accused of leaving his dogs in a hot car, resulting in their deaths as well.

As the community grapples with these events, it serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with pet ownership. Pets rely on their owners for care, safety, and love, and neglecting these duties can lead to tragic outcomes.

For more information on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership, resources are available through local animal shelters and organizations dedicated to promoting the humane treatment of animals.
