DEL RIO, Texas – In a serious case that highlights the dangers of crime, a 28-year-old woman from San Antonio named Jailene Reyes was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for taking an immigrant hostage. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), this incident involved demanding a ransom of $6,000.
Reyes pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit hostage-taking earlier this year in January. Her sentencing took place in a federal courtroom located in Del Rio, Texas, marking a significant moment in the ongoing fight against human trafficking and crime.
According to officials from the DOJ, the incident unfolded on August 4, 2024, when Reyes called the fiancé of the victim. In a chilling message, she threatened that if the ransom of $6,000 was not paid, the victim would be “sold to other people.” This alarming threat was not taken lightly.
The San Marcos Police Department was able to trace the phone call back to Reyes, leading to a crucial meeting that was set up between her and the victim’s fiancé. After this meeting, the Texas Department of Public Safety troopers acted swiftly. They conducted a traffic stop on Reyes, arrested her, and successfully rescued the hostage.
During the arrest, authorities also discovered a stolen handgun inside Reyes’ vehicle, raising further concerns about the potential for violence in this situation. When questioned, Reyes revealed that the hostage had been brought to her from Eagle Pass, Texas.
In total, the DOJ filed five charges against Reyes, including the conspiracy to commit hostage-taking. She was arrested just nine days after these charges were filed on June 6, 2025.
