Danh Thanh Dinh has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant. These charges are serious, classified as first-degree felonies according to court records.

‘Stopping his deadly behavior’
On June 23, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a suspicious person in far west Bexar County, specifically in the 8400 block of Knapp Rise. This prompted immediate action from law enforcement.
The first deputy on the scene noticed that the backyard gate of a nearby home was open. Upon checking, he discovered blood on the back porch, raising alarm bells about potential danger.
While exiting the backyard, the deputy spotted Dinh, who was armed with two knives and trying to enter the front of a house across the street. Notably, one of Dinh’s hands was bloody, indicating a possible altercation.
The deputy quickly called for backup. Two other deputies, including Deputy Calva, arrived shortly after at around 6:06 p.m. They positioned themselves in the driveway of a nearby home and ordered Dinh to drop the knives and surrender.
Despite their commands, Dinh ignored the deputies and jumped off the porch, waving the knives in a threatening manner towards them. This prompted the deputies to repeat their instructions for him to stop and disarm.
In a critical moment, Deputy Calva fired multiple shots at Dinh to stop what they described as “his deadly behavior.” The exact number of shots fired and the extent of Dinh’s injuries remain unclear.
After the incident, Dinh was handcuffed and transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he underwent surgery for gunshot wounds to his abdomen and lower back. As of June 24, he was reported to be in critical but stable condition.
Dinh’s residence is located next door to the home where law enforcement was initially dispatched. Despite being in custody, court documents reveal that he was not lucid enough to be magistrated.
During a news conference on June 23, Sheriff Javier Salazar characterized the shooting as an “unfortunate incident” occurring during a mental health crisis. The three deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, with the one who fired being a 16-year veteran of the sheriff’s office.
According to Bexar County court records, once Dinh is booked into the Bexar County jail, he will face a bond set at $200,000.
