SAN ANTONIO – A recent incident at an H-E-B store on Southeast Military Drive highlights the ongoing concerns about safety in the area. San Antonio police reported that a shootout occurred Monday night after security guards confronted a man who was firing a gun in the store’s parking lot.
According to investigators, when the guards approached the man, he allegedly fired at them. In response, the guards returned fire, hitting him. The man was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.
This isn’t the first time police have responded to incidents at this H-E-B location. Just last month, officers were called to the same store after a man recorded two alleged thieves attempting to steal his truck. The thieves had returned to retrieve a cellphone they left behind during the attempted theft.
San Antonio police statistics reveal that officers have been dispatched to this particular store over 100 times this year alone, addressing various issues from lost property to minor accidents and assault-related calls.
Local residents, like Dahila Medina, believe that increased and more visible security is necessary to help people feel safer. “I feel like they should add more security if anything to help people ease their minds,” she stated.
Conversely, another local, Mackey, expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of additional security, stating, “We can’t stop the criminals. I don’t care how much we patrol.” Mackey pointed out that the ongoing development in the area might be contributing to the rise in police calls.
The area has seen significant growth over the past few years, with new retailers and restaurants opening and several apartment complexes under construction. “It’s more so the apartment complex they are putting around here. There’s more people coming into San Antonio. We’re growing a lot,” Mackey noted.
Maxmilliano Montez, another frequent visitor to the area, commented on how the development might lead people to mistakenly believe that the area is safe. “Complacency, that can be a thing that can happen … it can hit you because you wouldn’t expect it,” he warned.
