DEL RIO, Texas – A serious incident unfolded on Saturday morning when a Del Rio police officer was shot while responding to a call. The event took place just before 7:30 a.m. in the 900 block of East 10th Street, a residential area located east of U.S. Highway 90 in Del Rio.
Initially, officers were dispatched to investigate a vehicle alarm going off. Upon arrival, they discovered a white GMC Sierra 2500 with its alarm blaring. In an effort to locate the vehicle’s owner, officers began to search the vicinity.
During their investigation, authorities noticed an open front door at a nearby home, which led them to approach the property. According to the Del Rio police department, officers announced their presence multiple times before they encountered a suspect named Eric Anthony Castillo.
Without warning, Castillo pointed a gun at the officers and fired multiple shots. Tragically, one officer was shot in the thigh. Fortunately, the injury was non-life threatening, and the officer was later transported to a local hospital for treatment.
In response to the gunfire, the officers returned fire. Castillo then retreated into the home and barricaded himself inside. After a standoff, law enforcement was able to apprehend him.
Castillo faces serious charges, including attempted capital murder of a police officer, deadly conduct, and aggravated assault of a public servant. The police department has emphasized the gravity of this situation and the risks that law enforcement officers face daily.
