SAN ANTONIO – Residents in the Bent Tree neighborhood of Kendall County believed their gated community would provide a safe and serene environment. However, the early hours of Wednesday morning shattered that sense of security when gunfire erupted around 5 a.m. A Kendall County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who was reportedly armed.

Witness Sheila Ponce described her shock, saying, “It woke me up out of a dead sleep. I heard ‘dut, dut, dut, dut, dut,’ and I come from a background where I figured that was rifle shots.” When she looked outside, she saw emergency responders and a man lying on the ground, seemingly lifeless.

According to a post from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the neighborhood near Sisterdale Road, close to Interstate 10, after receiving reports of a man in just his underwear firing a weapon. It was later revealed that the man had also fired shots at a neighbor.

A spokesman for the sheriff’s office has not provided further details, indicating that an investigation is ongoing. While it was confirmed that the shooting was fatal, information on the deceased has not yet been released.

Fortunately, the sheriff’s office confirmed that no one else was injured during the incident. However, residents are left with many questions about how such a violent act could occur in their seemingly safe neighborhood. “Did he come in from Sisterdale (Road) and walk through all that with no shoes on? I don’t know,” Ponce pondered aloud.

The name of the individual who was killed has yet to be disclosed, leaving the community in a state of uncertainty and concern for their safety.
