SAN ANTONIO – A judge has recently denied bond for a man accused of being involved in a tragic car crash linked to street racing.
Jose Juan Nagera, 38, was taken into custody on Saturday facing serious charges of racing that resulted in severe injuries. The incident occurred on March 17, 2026, and has raised significant concerns about the dangers of street racing in urban areas.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, Nagera was allegedly racing against another driver, Raul Gallegos, Jr., 20, on Culebra Road, which is located near Interstate 10. Police reports indicate that Gallegos lost control of his vehicle during the race, veering into oncoming traffic and colliding with another car.
The crash had devastating consequences; a woman in the other vehicle, who was not part of the racing, sustained serious injuries. Tragically, Gallegos and his 12-year-old nephew, Jonathan Rivera, were killed in the crash.
In the aftermath of the incident, candles and heartfelt tributes have been placed at the crash site to honor Gallegos and Rivera. Witnesses reported that Gallegos was racing against a dark-colored pickup truck, which fled the scene immediately following the crash.
Investigators managed to collect dashcam footage that captured both the pickup and the crash itself. This evidence proved pivotal; the video contained distinctive features of the truck, which allowed the police to track it down.
When authorities located Nagera, he initially denied participating in the race but later confessed to being the owner of the pickup truck involved. His admission has led to serious legal repercussions, emphasizing the potentially fatal consequences of street racing.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with street racing, not just for those involved but for innocent bystanders as well. The community is left mourning the loss of young lives while also calling for greater awareness and stricter enforcement against illegal street racing activities.
Candles and written tributes now mark the spot where Raul Gallegos, Jr., 20, and his 12-year-old nephew, Jonathan Rivera, died last Tuesday.
