WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – President Donald Trump made headlines on Saturday with an unconventional announcement: he has offered the position of White House press secretary to Dana White, the head of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and a long-time friend. This unexpected move reflects Trump’s penchant for breaking norms, and while the White House has not confirmed the offer, it raises questions about the future direction of his administration.
During a visit to his golf club in Florida, Trump shared on social media that he extended the offer to “the Great Dana White, a violent Fighter and Warrior,” suggesting that White would serve as his chief spokesperson. In a characteristic twist, Trump further requested that White bring along several UFC fighters as “assistants,” stating, “We need these people to defend us against the Lunatic Left. Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other. Dana, please take the job!”
As of now, the White House has not responded to inquiries regarding Trump’s post, and Dana White was attending a boxing event in London at the time. A spokesperson for the UFC has yet to provide any comments on the matter. However, White did share an image of Trump’s post on Instagram, featuring himself behind the podium in the White House press briefing room, captioned with “On to the next chapter.”
This announcement comes during a tumultuous period for Trump’s administration. Following significant losses for the Republican Party in the recent midterm elections, where Democrats secured historic wins even in traditionally Republican strongholds, Trump’s leadership is facing scrutiny. The GOP lost control of both chambers of Congress, prompting a reevaluation of strategy within the party.
In the wake of these elections, Trump has initiated a shake-up in his inner circle. He announced the replacement of his long-time adviser Susie Wiles with Stephen Miller, known for his hard-line immigration policies and influence within Trump’s administration. This shift follows a brief and tumultuous experiment with Katie Zacharia, who served as press secretary for just five days before departing.
The position of press secretary has been vacant since Karoline Leavitt’s departure at the end of August, leaving Trump without a chief spokesperson during a critical time for the administration. The potential appointment of Dana White, a figure outside traditional political circles, could indicate a shift towards a more combative communication style.
Trump’s friendship with White is well-documented; the two have attended various UFC events together, further solidifying their bond. Notably, White participated in celebrations on the White House’s South Lawn for America’s 250th year of independence, an event that featured a unique wire-mesh Octagon and showcased a blend of sports and political culture.
In addition, White has spoken at the Republican National Conventions in 2016, 2020, and 2024, emphasizing his influence and connection to the political landscape. As the Trump administration navigates through these challenging waters, the prospect of Dana White as press secretary raises both eyebrows and expectations for a new chapter in political communication.
