Inflation, tariffs and a voter revolt: The midterm verdict on Trump’s economy

WASHINGTON – In the recent midterm elections, President Donald Trump faced a tough reality check as inflation impacted voters’ decisions, contributing to significant losses for Republicans in key races across the House, Senate, and gubernatorial levels.

According to a comprehensive survey by The AP Voter Poll, which sampled around 100,000 midterm voters, many Americans blamed Trump’s policies for rising costs. Instead of successfully blaming his predecessor, President Joe Biden, for the inflation, voters pointed to Trump’s own actions, including tariffs and energy policies, as contributors to the economic turmoil.

The poll revealed that about two-thirds of voters believed Trump’s policies worsened inflation, while less than half felt the same about Biden’s policies. From California to Mississippi, many voters agreed that Trump’s taxes on foreign imports had negative consequences for the economy.

Despite Trump’s claim at a rally in Iowa that he had “done a great job” and that “prices are coming way down,” many voters expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the economy. Consumer prices have increased by 3.7% over the past year, compared to a 3% inflation rate at the start of Trump’s second term.

While the overall economy is still growing, with the S&P 500 stock index up over 10% this year and unemployment at a healthy 4.2%, concerns about high inflation remain. Interestingly, Trump’s handling of the economy and the controversial expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) have sparked mixed feelings among voters. Many voters are anxious about AI’s potential to displace jobs and create financial instability.

Moreover, the growing wealth gap is troubling for many. A significant portion of voters, including those with high incomes, feel that the economy favors the wealthy, while everyday Americans are struggling. This sentiment was particularly pronounced among voters earning less than $50,000 a year, with 60% reporting that they are worse off than two years ago.

Interestingly, healthcare costs were another major concern, with around 60% of voters wanting the government to take a more active role in reducing medical expenses. Many voters attribute rising healthcare costs to Trump’s policies.

Overall, the midterm elections indicated that voters are looking for change and are dissatisfied with the current administration’s economic approach. The results suggest a desire for a government that prioritizes the needs of ordinary Americans over the interests of the wealthy. As the political landscape shifts, it remains to be seen how these economic concerns will shape future policy decisions.

The AP Voter Poll, conducted by SSRS for various major news organizations, provides critical insights into voter sentiment and the factors influencing their choices in the midterm elections. The survey’s methodology ensures a comprehensive understanding of the electorate, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 0.6 percentage points for the full sample.
