Hello parents, teachers and students! If you’re looking for a fun way to understand simple machines, this experiment is for you. Simple machines, like levers and pulleys, are fundamental concepts in physics that help us understand how to make work easier. This hands-on project will not only be entertaining but also educational, providing insights into the mechanics of catapults and the principles of force and motion.

Be sure to check out GMSA@9 on Wednesdays, when Meteorologist Sarah Spivey demonstrates and explains the science behind it. Sarah’s engaging style and deep knowledge make complex concepts accessible, making her a great resource for students eager to learn more about science.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED

For the popsicle stick catapults, you will need:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Rubber bands
  • A plastic spoon
  • Small objects to launch (like marshmallows or small balls)

For the balloon-straw transportation experiment, gather these materials:

  • Balloon
  • Straws
  • Tape
  • Small lightweight objects

BALLOON-STRAW TRANSPORTATION

In this activity, you will explore how air pressure can move objects. By inflating a balloon and releasing it, you will create a propulsion system that can transport small items through a straw. This experiment illustrates Newton’s third law of motion: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. It’s a fun way to understand how rockets work!

ASSEMBLE THE CATAPULT

Here’s how to construct your own popsicle stick catapult:
