In a significant move reflecting its strategic shift towards artificial intelligence, Microsoft has offered voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees, which constitutes about 27% of its global workforce. This initiative comes as the tech giant allocates substantial resources towards AI development and infrastructure.

The voluntary exit offer, as detailed by Chief People Officer Amy Coleman in a recent blog post, is available to eligible employees across several countries, including Canada, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Coleman emphasized the company’s commitment to learning from this new approach while continuing to support employees in focusing on essential work, acquiring new skills, and exploring opportunities within Microsoft.

As of June, Microsoft reported a workforce of around 223,000 full-time employees. This announcement of voluntary buyouts is part of a broader trend observed within the company, which has seen significant workforce reductions in recent months. In May alone, Microsoft had plans to extend buyouts to about 8,750 employees, representing roughly 7% of its U.S. workforce. Furthermore, in July, it was reported that the company was cutting about 4,800 jobs, or 2.1% of its global workforce, impacting various sectors, including its Xbox video game business.

Amid these workforce adjustments, Microsoft’s stock has seen a positive trajectory, reaching an all-time high earlier this month. On Monday, shares rose by approximately 1%, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s future direction.

The surge of investments in data centers, projected to exceed $700 billion this year, underscores the escalating costs associated with powering artificial intelligence technologies. This increase in investment has driven up the prices of essential components, such as memory chips and computer processors, along with the cost of electricity. Economists anticipate that these trends will contribute to inflationary pressures at least through the end of the year.

Microsoft has been progressively enhancing its AI capabilities, with notable advancements in recent years. In 2024, the company announced a new generation of AI-integrated personal computers, highlighting the incorporation of its AI assistant, Copilot, into the Windows operating system. This initiative aims to engage millions of consumers and streamline their computing experience.

Looking ahead, Microsoft continues to innovate within the AI space. In October 2025, the company introduced Mico, a novel AI character designed to embody its Copilot virtual assistant. Mico features a playful, cartoonish appearance, showcasing Microsoft’s commitment to blending technology with user-friendly design.

As the landscape of technology evolves, Microsoft’s focus on AI represents a significant pivot that not only affects its workforce but also has broader implications for the tech industry as a whole. The company’s decisions in this arena will likely influence its competitive standing and shape the future of artificial intelligence integration across various platforms.
