MILWAUKEE – The Tampa Bay Rays narrowly fell short in the World Series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, losing 3-2 in a game marked by crucial moments and missed opportunities. A few inches in different directions combined with some sharp baserunning could have altered the outcome for the Rays, who found themselves on the losing end of a tightly contested match.

In a game where the margins were thin, the Rays’ Victor Mesa Jr. and Jonathan Aranda were caught stealing in consecutive innings, highlighting the aggressive yet risky approach Tampa Bay is known for. Conversely, the Brewers capitalized on errors, scoring twice in the first inning due to hard-hit balls that deflected off the gloves of center fielder Jonny DeLuca and shortstop Taylor Walls.

The Brewers took advantage of these moments, securing a victory that reflected their ability to play smart baseball. “Definitely have to be smart. We talked about that coming in,” said Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson. “They just played the game better than us today.”

The pivotal first inning set the tone for the game. Christian Yelich hit a one-out drive that DeLuca attempted to catch but missed, allowing Yelich to reach third base with a triple. The next batter, William Contreras, lined a pitch that also eluded Walls, granting the Brewers a quick 2-0 lead.

“You can’t be perfect in this game,” DeLuca reflected after the game. “You’re going to fail a lot more than you’re going to succeed.” However, Rays manager Kevin Cash saw potential in DeLuca’s effort, noting, “Jonny covered a lot of ground right there to even make that play close. Highlight-reel play.”

Despite falling behind, the Rays fought back, with Liam Hicks’ RBI groundout narrowing the gap to 2-1. However, critical moments continued to haunt them; Mesa was caught stealing third base with Yandy Díaz at the plate, a decision that left Cash questioning the timing of such aggressiveness. “Victor is really competing, trying to do something to make something happen,” he said, acknowledging the risks involved.

The Brewers added an insurance run in the seventh inning after a leadoff walk by Steven Matz, who had initially been ahead in the count. This proved crucial as Tampa Bay ended the game without a hit with runners in scoring position, going 0 for 6 on those opportunities while Milwaukee was 2 for 8. This stark contrast underscored the importance of capitalizing on chances, especially in postseason play.

As the teams look ahead to the rest of the series, Simpson emphasized the need for the Rays to return to their aggressive style of play. “They play the same type of game we play, so we know it’s going to be close, like today was,” he stated. “We’ve got to continue to play our game the best that we can, and we should come out on top most of the time.”

The game highlighted not only the competitive spirit of both teams but also the razor-thin margins that define postseason baseball. As the Rays regroup for their next matchup, they will undoubtedly keep in mind the lessons learned from this close encounter with the Brewers.
