MEDINA COUNTY, Texas – A family in Medina County is facing immense challenges as they seek to rebuild their lives after enduring the loss of their father to cancer and subsequently losing their home to a devastating fire on the night of his funeral.
Crystal Castro, the daughter, expressed the difficulty of navigating this period of grief while supporting her mother and sister. The family had only recently built their home three years prior, specifically designed to cater to the needs of their disabled daughter, Jeanette. “I have chosen to fight for my mom and my sister to be OK because I can’t let them down,” Castro remarked, highlighting her determination to uphold the family’s spirit.
Family’s Journey Through Loss
The Castro family’s hardships began with Ruben Castro, a disabled veteran, receiving a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Tragically, only 21 days elapsed between his diagnosis and his passing, a period marked by a rapid decline in his health. Castro described the emotional toll this took on the family as they witnessed their beloved father go from walking and talking to losing his mobility in a matter of days. “He spent the final three days of his life at home, surrounded by his family and pets, in the place that he loved,” she shared.
Ruben Castro passed away on September 9, and the family held a funeral service on September 25, a day that would soon become overshadowed by an even greater tragedy.
The Night of Devastation
On the night of the funeral, the Castro family gathered at their home with six others, including Crystal’s mother, Jeanette, and four aunts, one of whom is also disabled. Tragically, that very night, a fire broke out, destroying the home they had built with such love and care.
“Everyone was so exhausted,” Crystal recalled. “As you can imagine, it was a very emotional day, and that’s the night it burned.” Firefighters believe the blaze was ignited by an electric wheelchair that had been plugged in inside the garage. Fortunately, everyone inside survived, thanks in part to the family’s dogs, whose barking and scratching alerted them to the danger. “If it wasn’t for their barking and their scratching, I don’t know if my mom would have woken up on time,” Castro stated, expressing gratitude for the dogs’ instinct to protect.
Community Steps In to Help
Currently, Crystal’s mother and sister are staying at an Airbnb while she navigates the challenges of rebuilding their lives. The community has rallied around the family, raising nearly $9,000 in support over the past several weeks, which has provided some relief in this difficult time.
Despite the overwhelming support, Crystal has found it challenging to process the loss of her father and the destruction of their home. As a single mother to her 4-year-old son, she is focused on remaining strong for her family. “I haven’t had time to grieve,” she admitted, showcasing the dual burden of her responsibilities. “I’m a single mom who is also trying to stay strong for my 4-year-old son.”
As she works tirelessly to help her family rebuild, Crystal holds on to the determination her father instilled in her. “Don’t worry, Dad. I’m not giving up,” she affirmed, embodying the resilience that defines the Castro family during this trying time.
