SAN ANTONIO – In a quiet neighborhood on Gladstone Street in South San Antonio, things have taken a turn for the worse. According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), officers have been called to the same home 27 times in just one year. This dramatic increase in police presence has left many residents concerned about their safety.
Neighbors describe the area as once peaceful, but that changed with the arrival of new neighbors. “The man was hollering and screaming, and the lady was hollering and screaming, and he was holding on to his arm,” said Angie, a neighbor who witnessed a recent incident involving gunfire. “So apparently he got shot in the arm.”
Another neighbor, Emma, also reported hearing gunshots but chose to stay inside. It seems that the distressing noises are becoming all too common in this once-quiet community.
SAPD confirms that one suspect fled the scene of the recent shooting, and as of now, no arrests have been made. Angie noted that there is “always something going on” at the troubled home, with frequent loud arguments echoing through the neighborhood. Carlos, another resident, expressed his concern, saying there has been “a lot of activity” lately, which is unusual for their typically calm surroundings.
In response to the rising concerns, Officer Emily Garvin of the SAPD stated that they increase patrols in neighborhoods following major incidents. This includes assigning specialized units known as SAFFE (San Antonio Fear Free Environment) to help restore peace. Garvin emphasized the importance of residents reporting any issues, no matter how small, as it helps the police document problems and deploy resources more effectively. “The more documentation, the more we’re able to get patrol officers out there,” she said.
City officials are also taking these concerns seriously. “I take these concerns very seriously and my office is committed to working alongside residents, SAPD, and the appropriate City Departments to address ongoing issues and identify solutions to improve safety and quality of life for the neighborhood,” stated local representative Castillo in an email.
If you have any information regarding the recent shooting or other incidents in the area, the SAPD encourages you to come forward.
