LINZ – In an exhilarating display of talent and strategy, the UEFA Champions League Matchday 2 witnessed unprecedented scoring, as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Real Madrid delivered unforgettable performances that left fans and critics alike in awe.

A total of 78 goals were scored over the course of the two matchdays, breaking the previous record of 71 goals set in Matchday 3 of the previous season. Among the standout matches on Wednesday, Liverpool’s 6-3 victory against Austrian champions LASK highlighted the offensive prowess showcased throughout the tournament.

PSG Stuns Manchester City

Defending champions PSG demonstrated their dominance with a decisive 4-2 victory over Manchester City. The Parisians stunned the home crowd with three early goals that left even the most ardent City supporters, including former manager Pep Guardiola, in disbelief.

Désiré Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute, followed by a brilliant lobbed assist to Ousmane Dembélé just two minutes later. Vitinha added a third goal in the 32nd minute, silencing the Manchester crowd and showcasing PSG’s attacking prowess.

Despite a spirited response from City, with Erling Haaland scoring two goals to keep them in the game, PSG’s Maghnes Akliouche thwarted their momentum by scoring the fourth goal. Haaland’s second goal marked his impressive 61st goal in just 60 Champions League appearances.

City’s struggles were compounded by the backdrop of recent financial rule-breaking charges, marking this match as their first European encounter since the allegations surfaced.

Real Madrid’s Late Comeback

In Rome, Real Madrid staged a thrilling comeback against AS Roma, clinching a 4-3 victory thanks to an astonishing last-minute goal from Antonio Rüdiger. The match witnessed a rollercoaster of emotions, with Roma initially taking a commanding 3-1 lead.

Marten de Roon’s opening goal was answered by Kylian Mbappé, who scored on his 100th Champions League appearance, making him the youngest player to reach this milestone at just 27 years old. Roma regained the lead with two goals from Donyell Malen, but Madrid’s substitutes proved crucial, with Carlos Espí and Endrick scoring to level the match.

Rüdiger’s decisive goal from close range capped off a dramatic encounter, showcasing the resilience and fighting spirit of the Madrid side.

Other Noteworthy Matches

In another thrilling clash, Real Betis edged out Porto 3-2, with Isco scoring the winning goal and Abde Ezzalzouli netting a spectacular strike. The match was marked by intense competition and tempers flaring, leading to several bookings.

Liverpool’s Bradley Barcola shone brightly with a hat trick in their 6-3 triumph over LASK, marking his first goals for the club since transferring from PSG. The match also saw Ronald Araújo score his first goal for Liverpool, highlighting the team’s attacking depth.

Aston Villa also made headlines with a resounding 6-0 victory over Fenerbahçe, showcasing their offensive capabilities. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley each scored twice, further emphasizing the competitive nature of this season’s Champions League.

As the Champions League progresses, fans can expect more thrilling matches filled with high stakes and unforgettable moments, as teams vie for glory on the prestigious European stage.
