SAN ANTONIO – On a lively Wednesday evening, President Donald Trump held a campaign rally in San Antonio, Texas, where he was met with a mix of enthusiastic supporters and vocal protesters. As early voting for the upcoming midterm elections approaches, political experts are weighing the potential impact of Trump’s visit on the electoral landscape.

According to David Crockett, a political science professor at Trinity University, Trump’s rally might energize his loyal followers but isn’t likely to sway voters outside his base. “What they need to do is motivate the people who are not the natural MAGA base to show up, and this kind of really is not going to do anything for that,” Crockett explained.

This observation raises questions about Texas’s political competitiveness, as the state has historically leaned Republican. Crockett noted, “If they are defending Texas seats, they are spending time and money here that they want to spend somewhere else, and that’s a sign of the trouble that they’re in.”

Trump’s Support for Texas Republicans

During the rally at Freeman Coliseum, Trump expressed strong support for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is currently in a tight race against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico for a U.S. Senate seat. Praising Paxton, Trump stated, “I think he’s the greatest attorney general in the history of the state of Texas.” This endorsement comes as polls show Paxton trailing in the closely watched race.

Paxton, aiming to rally support, took the opportunity to criticize Talarico, questioning his absence from public appearances since falling ill with the flu. “Where is James Talarico?” Paxton asked, prompting cheers from the audience.

Protests Highlight Divided Opinions

As is typical of Trump rallies, the event featured familiar themes and the president’s signature style. However, not everyone welcomed his presence. Outside the venue, protesters gathered to voice their opposition, while inside, some individuals interrupted Trump’s speech, leading to boos from his supporters and forcing Trump to pause multiple times.

Can Trump’s Visit Change Voter Opinions?

Despite the buzz surrounding the rally, Crockett’s analysis suggests that it may not significantly alter the dynamics of the Senate race. While Trump’s presence could motivate his existing supporters, the challenge remains to engage undecided voters.

For many Texas voters, their decisions have already been influenced by personal beliefs. Juan Ortiz, a voter in the Senate race, expressed that his choice is shaped by his religious convictions. He commented on Talarico’s past remarks about non-binary identities, saying, “When I hear that somebody who wants to lead our state and say that God’s non-binary and that Jesus wasn’t born of a virgin, that conflicts me because that’s my identity.” Talarico made this remark during a 2021 Texas House session, and he acknowledged that he aimed to be provocative.
