KERR COUNTY, Texas – Recently, a significant development occurred in the ongoing investigation of Camp Mystic, a summer camp in Texas. The district attorney, Lucy Wilke, has decided to step back from the case due to her close connections to the local community and personal ties to a family that runs the camp.
This investigation took a serious turn following the tragic floods on July 4, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 25 campers, two counselors, and the camp’s owner, Dick Eastland. The Texas Rangers are now looking into potential criminal conduct linked to the camp’s management during this natural disaster.
Wilke expressed her discomfort and loss of impartiality regarding the case, noting her friendships with individuals connected to the Eastland family. She also highlighted that her office is short-staffed, lacking the necessary resources to manage such a complex investigation and any subsequent legal actions.
In light of this, she has requested that a special prosecutor from the Texas Attorney General’s Office be appointed to take over the investigation.
Eastlands Challenge Investigation
While the investigation unfolds, members of the Eastland family are also taking legal action to block the review of electronic evidence obtained through search warrants executed by the Texas Rangers. Their attorney filed motions seeking to prevent investigators from accessing this data, claiming that the warrants are too broad and could infringe on attorney-client confidentiality.
The Texas Rangers alleged that the leadership at Camp Mystic failed to prepare adequately for a flood that was expected and did not act swiftly enough when the situation worsened. These actions are believed to have recklessly led to the tragic deaths of the campers and counselors.
Potential charges that could arise from this investigation include manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, among others, although no formal charges have been filed yet. The situation remains sensitive and continues to develop as the community seeks answers and justice for the lives lost.
