WIMBERLY, Texas – On Thursday, Hays County authorities made a startling discovery at a residence in Wimberley where a man who drowned in Canyon Lake had previously lived. The investigation began when first responders were alerted to the presence of explosive materials at the property located in the 2700 block of Fischer Store Road.
Emergency personnel arrived at approximately 8:30 a.m. and identified what appeared to be military-grade and homemade explosives. The immediate response team, consisting of sheriff deputies and fire marshals, quickly assessed the situation and determined that the expertise of a bomb squad was necessary to handle the situation safely.
To ensure public safety, the Austin Police Department Bomb Squad was called to the scene. After conducting a thorough evaluation of the materials, they concluded that the safest method for disposal was through controlled detonations. The individual previously residing at the home was identified as Robert Chapman, a 40-year-old man who tragically drowned in Canyon Lake on August 30. According to the news release, Chapman is believed to be responsible for the explosive materials found at his former residence. Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosives and their connection to Chapman.
Despite the alarming discovery, Hays County officials have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community near the Wimberley home.
