NEW YORK – The longtime chief executive of the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced Friday that he is stepping down, days after he was filmed physically restraining two protesters during an altercation at a New York runway show.
“I am enormously proud of what we have built together and believe this is the right moment for both me and the organization to begin a new chapter,” Steven Kolb said in a statement.
Kolb is stepping down after two decades leading the council, which is known as the fashion industry’s main trade organization. His departure comes shortly after a controversial incident at a runway show for the brand Cos, owned by H&M.
During this event, Kolb was filmed forcibly restraining two members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) who were protesting against the use of wool and other animal products in fashion. The footage, which quickly circulated online, shocked many in the fashion community.
Following the incident, Kolb issued an apology and announced he would be taking a leave of absence while an investigation took place. The CFDA praised Kolb as a “dedicated leader and tireless champion of American fashion” in their statement regarding his resignation.
In a statement, the CFDA expressed gratitude for his years of service, emphasizing his influential role in shaping the fashion industry. Moira Colley, a senior director at PETA in New York, mentioned that the organization still plans to meet with Kolb to discuss their concerns over animal welfare in fashion.
PETA had initially considered filing a police report against Kolb but later decided against it after consulting with their attorneys. They acknowledged Kolb’s previous contributions, particularly his efforts in getting fur banned from runway shows on the CFDA schedule.
The protest was led by Andrija Barak, who aimed to draw attention to the ethical issues surrounding wool. In the video of the incident, Kolb can be seen covering Barak’s mouth and restraining her. He also pushed another protester, Mason Melito, attempting to silence their slogans.
