Knife attack on Sikh trucker in Wyoming stirs fresh fears in community

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A recent stabbing incident involving a truck driver at a rest stop in Wyoming has raised serious concerns within the U.S. Sikh community. This attack has occurred against a backdrop of increasing anti-immigrant sentiment, particularly targeting Sikh truck drivers.

The victim, a Sikh man, was attacked early Sunday morning while using the restroom at the Bitter Creek rest stop along Interstate 80, located between Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Salt Lake City, Utah. According to official reports, he sustained multiple stab wounds to his neck and chest and suffered over a dozen cuts, yet he managed to survive the brutal attack.

While law enforcement officials have stated that they do not yet know the motive behind this violent act, community leaders have expressed concerns that it may be linked to the growing hostility towards Sikhs, especially following a series of fatal accidents involving Sikh truck drivers. Harsimran Singh, CEO of Gillson Trucking in Stockton, California, noted, “I’ve been here for the last 25-plus years. I never felt this kind of hate before.”

The investigation into the stabbing is ongoing, with Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Jeff Sheaman confirming that they currently have “zero motive” for the attack. The victim reported that he was attacked from behind while trying to use the restroom. He managed to push back against his assailant but did not initially see the knife.

Within hours of the incident, police arrested Andrew Kris Bzdak, who was found in nearby Carbon County, Wyoming. Witnesses at the rest area heard the attack and followed Bzdak’s truck, alerting authorities. Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the stabbing, showing the victim entering the restroom and Bzdak following closely behind.

Bzdak is currently being held on a $1 million bond, charged with attempted murder, which could lead to life in prison if convicted. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Thursday. Attempts to reach Bzdak for comments have been unsuccessful.

The rise in anti-Sikh sentiment is alarming for a community that numbers around 750,000 in the U.S., with many involved in the trucking industry. Advocacy groups estimate that at least 150,000 Sikh truck drivers are active in the country. Many Sikh men wear distinct turbans and maintain uncut hair and beards, which can make them easily identifiable.

In recent years, negative incidents involving Sikh truck drivers have further fueled this animosity. For example, in August 2025, a Sikh truck driver caused a crash in Florida that resulted in three fatalities, leading to widespread harassment of Sikh drivers. Additionally, a separate incident last October involved another Sikh driver accused of causing a deadly crash while allegedly under the influence of drugs.

These incidents have been compounded by social media posts from authorities that have been interpreted as inciting anti-immigrant feelings. A post from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security depicted a dark-skinned man with a beard, suggesting that Sikh drivers are unfit to be on the road. Community representatives argue that such depictions unfairly generalize and stigmatize all Sikh individuals, as the name “Singh” is common among Sikhs.

Jasjit Singh, director of legal services for the Jakara Movement, a Sikh advocacy group, emphasized the difficulty in separating this crime from the broader context of racism that many Sikhs face. He stated, “Until something really bad happens to us, nothing is going to really happen.”

The victim of the stabbing is now recovering after spending five days in a hospital in Casper, Wyoming, and hopes to return to driving his truck across the state. However, Harsimran Singh expressed concern that such incidents may become more common. “We are probably going to see more of this,” he said. “I’m not surprised that it has happened.”
