NEW YORK – Ed Sheeran has recently spoken out regarding the removal of Macklemore from his tour after the rapper made pro-Palestinian remarks during a show. Sheeran clarified that the decision to drop Macklemore was made solely by the tour promoters and not by him. He emphasized that he would never intentionally disappoint his fans or the crew relying on him for their livelihoods.
On Instagram, Sheeran stated, “Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine. I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living.” This statement comes after Macklemore revealed he was removed from the Loop Tour after expressing “Free Palestine!” during a performance on September 5 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Macklemore had addressed the audience with a message of solidarity, saying, “To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters, criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide, it in no way is criticism of you.” Following his comments, Macklemore took to Instagram to explain that several U.S. venues indicated they would not allow him to perform as Sheeran’s opening act, influenced by Robert Kraft, the owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots.
Kraft released a statement saying the decision to cancel Macklemore stemmed from his recent comments and a perceived history of antisemitic rhetoric that he believes has deeply hurt the Jewish community. Sheeran stated that he had discussions with the venues to try to find a solution, but ultimately, the promoter’s decision was final.
The situation highlights the complexity of public statements during times of conflict, as many organizations and experts assert that Israel’s actions in Gaza could be classified as genocide. Israel has strongly rejected such allegations.
Macklemore was slated to perform at eight of Sheeran’s remaining stadium tour dates, which will resume in Philadelphia. New acts Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe have since been added to the lineup instead. The tour will include stops at notable venues like Gillette Stadium and Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Sheeran expressed that his goal is to use music to unite people from diverse backgrounds, and while he holds personal views on the conflict, he prefers not to engage in public political discussions. He stated, “I respect Macklemore’s strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes. However, there is room for multiple approaches to the same end: peace.”
