VILNIUS – In a significant development for regional security, NATO fighter jets successfully intercepted and shot down a drone that had entered Lithuanian airspace overnight. This incident occurred shortly after NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte had expressed that any strikes near NATO territories would prompt the alliance to ramp up its support for Ukraine.
The drone was downed near Pratkūnai, a village located in the Kaišiadorys district, approximately 60 miles (100 kilometers) west of Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, and adjacent to the Kaunas Reservoir, as reported by Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Center.
This incident marks a notable first for Lithuania, as it is the first time a drone has been shot down in the nation’s airspace. Authorities have yet to disclose the origin or intended purpose of the drone, emphasizing that further investigation is necessary.

According to Antanas Matutis, the commander of the Lithuanian air force, debris from the drone has been located, and it is believed to have been carrying explosives. Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the crisis center, indicated that the drone likely entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus and was active for about 30 minutes before being intercepted, during which it navigated near populated areas.

In a troubling update, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that eight individuals were injured in recent Russian strikes in Kyiv, which included attacks on gas stations. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have shot down 222 Ukrainian drones overnight. In response, a significant Ukrainian drone attack led to multiple fires in Taganrog, Russia, damaging residential buildings, educational institutions, and other structures.
