INGLEWOOD, Calif. – In a significant shift, Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has announced that the team will not contest the NBA’s recent penalties related to salary cap circumvention. This decision marks a departure from the team’s previous stance, where they expressed defiance towards what they described as “a heavily biased investigation.”
In his first public statement since the NBA’s punitive measures were disclosed earlier this month, Ballmer confirmed that the organization would comply with the league’s findings. The NBA had imposed a one-year suspension on Ballmer, levied a substantial $30 million fine on the franchise, and mandated the forfeiture of five first-round draft picks.
Ballmer disclosed that the team has already settled the financial penalty. “While there are still disagreements concerning the findings in the report, this is not where I want to focus,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of supporting the team rather than perpetuating distractions.
In an apology directed at Clippers fans, employees, and fellow team owners, Ballmer expressed regret for the “distraction and distress” stemming from the investigation. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by everyone connected to the Clippers and accepted full responsibility as the principal owner. “This has been a very difficult time for everybody associated with the Clippers, and for that, I have sincere regrets,” he articulated.
The NBA’s decision to impose such severe penalties followed a thorough investigation conducted over nearly a year by an outside law firm. Initially, the Clippers maintained their innocence, asserting that they had adhered to league regulations and expected to be vindicated.
After the penalties were announced, the organization reiterated its strong disagreement with the NBA’s findings, labeling the investigation as “a heavily biased” endeavor. The Clippers also made public a letter from Ballmer’s attorney, David Kelley, who described the inquiry as “a witch hunt” and denounced the penalties as a “gross injustice.”
The NBA initiated its investigation in September 2025, probing whether a $28 million endorsement contract between star player Kawhi Leonard and Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC violated league rules. This investigation gained traction following a report by journalist Pablo Torre. Compounding the situation, Aspiration co-founder Joseph Sanberg has recently been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for defrauding investors and lenders of more than $248 million.
The league’s findings implicated Ballmer, stating that he knowingly aided Leonard in securing off-court income opportunities and approved business arrangements that facilitated the endorsement deal with Aspiration. Furthermore, the investigation concluded that he failed to maintain an environment that ensured adherence to league rules.
In light of the situation, Ballmer remarked on the team’s commitment to moving past this chapter. “The challenges ahead of us are significant, but so is our resolve,” he stated. “We will continue to build our team and invest in our community. The confidence of our fans is our priority. With our talented roster, outstanding staff, and clear vision, I am certain that we will compete at the highest level and be an organization our fans can be proud of.”
It is noteworthy that Leonard’s potential trade to the Toronto Raptors remains in limbo as the investigation’s outcomes have yet to be fully resolved. Despite this uncertainty, the Raptors have expressed continued interest in Leonard, who is reportedly eager to return to the team where he achieved NBA championship glory and was named Finals MVP in 2019.
