ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan’s football team is facing a pivotal moment in its season, with a matchup against No. 11 Oklahoma looming larger than the recent clock controversy that overshadowed their last game. The Wolverines narrowly edged out Western Michigan 13-12 in a dramatic finish that has sparked debate, particularly regarding a disputed second on the clock that allowed quarterback Bryce Underwood one last shot at a Hail Mary pass.

“That was a crazy game,” said Sooners linebacker Cole Sullivan, a transfer from Michigan, encapsulating the chaotic atmosphere surrounding the Wolverines’ recent performance.

Despite the thrilling finish, the attention on Michigan’s clock issues has somewhat masked broader concerns about their performance under new head coach Kyle Whittingham. “We got plenty to fix,” Whittingham acknowledged, emphasizing the urgency of improvement as the Wolverines prepare for a formidable opponent in Oklahoma.

Coming into the game against the Sooners, the Wolverines have fallen out of the AP Top 25 rankings and will enter as 6.5-point underdogs. This matchup not only represents a test of skill but also a critical moment for the Wolverines to reclaim their reputation as a powerhouse in college football.

Underwood, the much-hyped quarterback and former No. 1 recruit, made a striking entrance for the game against Western Michigan, fueled by a vibrant music and light show. He started strong, leading his team on a touchdown drive, but his performance waned as the game progressed. Despite a game-winning 47-yard touchdown throw, Underwood’s demeanor on the sideline was notably subdued.

“I just feel like we’ve got to come out and dominate and be aggressive — how we were the first drive — every single play,” Underwood stated, emphasizing the need for consistent energy throughout the game.

Whittingham has made it clear that Underwood must improve to maintain his role as Michigan’s starting quarterback. The pressure is mounting, especially with the potential for backup Tommy Carr to step in if Underwood’s performance does not meet expectations. Carr’s lineage, with a brother at Notre Dame and grandfathers in the College Football Hall of Fame, adds to the intrigue surrounding the Wolverines’ quarterback situation.

The Wolverines also faced challenges on defense and special teams during their last outing, notably with a 20-play touchdown drive from Western Michigan that showcased their struggles. Special teams issues were highlighted by a fumble on a punt return, and the team was penalized nine times for 80 yards, compounding their difficulties on the field.

Despite these setbacks, Oklahoma’s head coach Brent Venables remains respectful of Michigan’s legacy and potential. “We’ve put Michigan in a great light like they deserve for a long time here for the last several months,” he remarked, acknowledging the Wolverines’ storied history in college football.

As the Wolverines prepare for their showdown with Oklahoma, the focus will be on overcoming the recent challenges and reclaiming their place among the elite in college football. With the clock controversies behind them, it’s time for Michigan to step up and deliver a performance that reflects their storied legacy.
