STANFORD, Calif. – In a dazzling display of skill and teamwork, Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney demonstrated their potent chemistry during Miami’s season opener against Stanford. Mensah, making his debut for the Hurricanes, threw five touchdown passes, while Toney shattered a school record with 234 receiving yards, leading the seventh-ranked Hurricanes to a commanding 45-6 victory.

Mensah, who transferred from Duke in the offseason, expressed his eagerness to hit the field after a long offseason. “It took a lot to get to where I’m at today, so I was just ready to go,” he said. This readiness was evident as Mensah and Toney connected for touchdowns on Miami’s first two drives, setting the tone for the game. Their third connection, a 47-yard pass in the third quarter, broke the previous school record of 220 yards set by Eddie Brown in 1984.

“It means a lot knowing how many greats played at this university,” Toney remarked about breaking the record. “For me to be the player to break that record and set a new one, it just means a whole lot.”

Mensah wasted no time in showcasing his impact, launching a 48-yard pass to Toney on his very first snap. This set the stage for a 23-yard touchdown pass to Toney, followed by another 2-yard touchdown connection. Toney celebrated both scores with a Heisman pose, energizing the Miami fans.

“You couldn’t draw it up any better,” Mensah commented. “If you got one-on-one, if you’re leaving No. 1 one-on-one, that’s a problem.” Mensah continued to impress, adding another touchdown pass to Daylyn Upshaw in the second quarter and a 34-yarder to Cooper Barkate in the third, along with the deep strike to Toney. He finished the game with an impressive 27 completions out of 30 attempts for 401 yards, setting Miami records for most yards and touchdowns in a debut.

Last season, Mensah led all power conference quarterbacks with 3,973 passing yards. His partnership with Toney, who had a standout freshman year with 109 catches for 1,211 yards, promises to be a key asset for Miami as they aim for success this season.

On the opposing side, Stanford’s Davis Warren managed to throw for 214 yards but struggled to score against a formidable Miami defense. Coach Tavita Pritchard acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “There were spots tonight where we moved the football… We got to find consistency and we got to finish in the end zone.”

The key takeaways from the game highlight Miami’s offensive prowess, with the Hurricanes scoring touchdowns on six of their first seven drives, reinforcing their reputation as one of the top offenses in college football. However, Miami did suffer an injury to cornerback OJ Frederique early in the game, leaving his status uncertain.

As for Stanford, the loss against Miami marked a setback following their previous victory over Hawaii, and they have yet to start a season 2-0 since 2018. Looking ahead, Miami will host Florida A&M on Thursday night, while Stanford will travel to Duke on September 19.
