SAN ANTONIO – The Salvation Army shelter in San Antonio, which recently suffered significant storm damage, is set to remain open despite ongoing repairs. However, the organization anticipates suspending its senior day programming temporarily as they navigate this unexpected challenge.
During a severe storm on Friday night, parts of the roof at the Salvation Army Area Command and Center for Hope, located at West Elmira and North Flores, were torn off. This damage allowed water to infiltrate the building, leading to further complications.
“Our priority is to minimize the movement of residents in the shelter to avoid re-traumatization,” said Romack, a representative from the Salvation Army. “We want to keep them focused on their progress.” As of the latest updates, around 100 individuals were still utilizing the shelter, while others had found temporary accommodations with family or friends.
In response to the storm’s aftermath, workers began placing tarps on the damaged sections of the roof. However, Romack indicated that a complete repair would likely take several weeks. Despite the challenges, the organization is committed to keeping the shelter operational for those in need.
The senior programming, which typically includes food and activities, may face a temporary halt as resources are redirected to address the immediate needs of the shelter and its residents.
At this point, a comprehensive assessment of the water damage has yet to be completed. “There are many moving parts, and we are diligently working to stabilize the situation,” Romack noted. “We are committed to working hard, praying hard, and trusting that everything will come together.”
