LENOX, Mass. – In a historic move, the musicians of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) have voted to authorize their first strike in the ensemble’s 145-year history. This decision comes as their current contract nears its expiration at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.

The Boston Musicians’ Association, which represents the musicians, released a statement highlighting the ongoing tensions between the orchestra members and the management, particularly following the announcement in March that music director Andris Nelsons would be leaving after 13 seasons.

“Despite the turmoil over the past six months due to the management’s decision regarding our music director, they have not been willing to agree to a new contract that would help rebuild trust and provide fair compensation for the musicians who are essential to the BSO,” the union stated.

The union has also expressed frustration over management’s refusal to consider a mediator to help facilitate negotiations.

Responding to the situation, BSO CEO Chad Smith acknowledged the musicians’ right to strike as part of the negotiation process. He emphasized that the focus remains on constructive conversations aimed at reaching an agreement that includes competitive pay and benefits while fostering collaboration with the players.

As the orchestra’s season is set to begin on September 17, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether a resolution can be reached before the first performance.
