DALLAS – A Texas judge has recently made headlines by denying a request for a new trial for Karmelo Anthony, a 19-year-old convicted of murder in the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. This case, which occurred during a high school track meet, has sparked national discussions and controversy, particularly due to its racial undertones and the intense reactions from both families involved.

In June, Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison for stabbing Metcalf during an altercation. The incident, which took place in April 2025, has drawn attention not only for its tragic outcome but also for the way it has been discussed on social media, often highlighting racial tensions. Anthony is Black, while Metcalf was white, which has led to a complex narrative surrounding the case.

Judge Michael Chitty denied Anthony’s motion for a new trial after a thorough review of the evidence presented. Although the judge did not provide detailed reasons for his decision, Anthony’s attorney, Russell Wilson, expressed intentions to appeal the ruling, affirming their dedication to fighting for Anthony’s rights and pursuing every legal avenue available.

One central issue in the request for a retrial was an off-the-record agreement between the prosecution and defense to not introduce certain character evidence about both teenagers that could have inflamed tensions further. This decision was made to maintain a level of fairness in a case that was already charged with emotion and controversy.

Witness accounts indicate that a confrontation began when Anthony, who was sitting under Metcalf’s team’s tent, was asked to leave. The situation escalated, leading to Anthony allegedly provoking Metcalf. Prosecutors argued that Anthony was the aggressor, and witnesses reported that he brandished a knife during the incident, ultimately stabbing Metcalf in the chest.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis stated that they respected the court’s decision and maintained confidence in the original trial process. He extended condolences to the Metcalf family, acknowledging the pain they must endure following such a tragic event.

The trial has highlighted serious issues, including courtroom transparency and public access. Anthony’s attorneys criticized strict courtroom rules that they claimed limited public observation. Additionally, they requested the recusal of the trial judge due to comments made after the trial that seemed to endorse the jury’s verdict.

As the case continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding youth violence, racial tensions, and the legal system’s role in determining justice. The outcome of the appeal and any further developments will be closely watched by both communities and legal experts alike.
